Ten minutes from Mdina, the island simply ends. At Dingli the cliffs rise some 250 metres above the Mediterranean — a windswept, wide-open landscape of terraced fields, lone chapels and the little islet of Filfla on the horizon. It is Malta at its most elemental, and our favourite place to send guests at golden hour.

Walk the cliff path
An easy, mostly level trail runs along the cliff edge past the tiny chapel of St Mary Magdalene — big skies, big views, and the scent of wild thyme.

Stay for sunset
There is no better spot on the island to watch the sun drop into the sea. Bring a jacket; the wind picks up as the light goes.

Pair it with Buskett
Just inland lies Malta's only woodland and the Verdala Palace — shady, green and a complete contrast to the open cliffs.
