Walk to the far northwestern corner of Mdina and the city simply opens up. Bastion Square — also known as Ix-Xatt ta' Bettina — sits on top of the old city walls and looks out across the Maltese countryside in a broad panorama, from the central plains all the way to the sea on a clear day. A small viewpoint, but one of the most quietly dramatic spots on the island.
The view across Malta
On a clear morning you can see the whole central plain, the dome of Mosta, and the glint of sea beyond Valletta. At dusk the same view turns amber. It is the best free panorama on the island — and it is four minutes from our front door.
Bougainvillea and limestone
The square's walls are draped in deep-pink bougainvillea in spring and summer, blazing against the honey-coloured stone. One of the most photogenic corners of Mdina, and usually quiet enough to have to yourself.
Dawn and early evening
Arrive before the tour groups at dawn, or come back after 17:00 when the day-trippers have left. The square is genuinely still then, and the city earns its name.
